on December 10, 2011 at 13:16 hours while volunteers were busy working the Holiday bash at Keyser High School Rescue Local 38-3 was sounded for a 2 vehicle accident near Reese's Chapel Church on Route 972. Tower 38 responded with 4, BLS 38-70 responded with 2 and BLS 38-71 responded with 2 while returning from another call in the Keyser area. Medic 11 (C. Cox) arrived on scene and reported a head on collision with injury but no entrapment. The tower arrived on scene and Captain 38B (T. Amtower) assumed RT 972 Command. Engine Rescue 23 arrived on scene and assisted the tower crew with debris removal. BLS 38- 70 arrived on scene and started patient assesment with Medic 11 and they eventually transported 1 to Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. BLS 38-71 transported 1 to Potomac Valley Hospital. All units cleared the scene by 14:17 hours.

Units on scene from New Creek were - Tower 38, BLS 38 - 70, BLS 38 -71, and Medic 11. Engine Rescue 23 from McCoole (MD) Fire Rescue also responded.

The following evening on December 11, 2011 at 20:09 hours, Rescue Local 38-1 was sounded for a MVC on Pine Swamp Road near the water tower. Mineral County Sheriff Office units were already on scene and reported it to be a head on type incident. Lieutenant 38A (D. Morris) arrived on scene and established Pine Swamp Road Command. Tower 38 and Paramedic 38 -71 responded at 20:15. The Tower was instructed to assisted the EMS crews on scene, apply absorbant, and cut battery cables. Paramedic 38-70 responded shortly after the Tower and entered threw the Stoney Run Road entrance. Engine Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD) entered threw the Stoney Run entrance and was to Shut the Road down prior to the accident scene. Paramedic 38-71 transported 1 to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland, MD, while Paramedic 38 - 70 transported 1 to Potomac Valley Hospital. All units Cleared the scene by 21:12.

It's Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature !

On Saturday October 29th, Mother Nature kept New Creek volunteers busy with weather related calls. Beginning at 4:46 am members answered 13 emergencies, with the last incident at 11:47. The early snow storm brought a few inches of heavy, wet snow to the area, bringing down trees and power lines. The snow also wreaked havoc on the highways. Luckily no injuries were reported from any incidents. One house did suffer moderate damage, due to a tree falling onto it. A rundown of the incidents are listed below.

4:46 – Public Service 38-7 – Tree down/Transformer fire on Rt 93 at Walkers Ridge
5:28 – Public Service 38-3 – Tree into the power lines/arcing on Great Oak Valley Road

Rescue Local 38-4 Alerted

On October 15th, 2011 Rescue local 38-4 was sounded for a vehicle accident. Initial dispatch reported one vehicle with one patient in the ditch. BLS 38-70 went in route with 3 and was the first unit on scene. Not far behind was Tower 38 with 5 and BLS 38-71 with 2. 38-71 was placed in service once 38-70 confirmed only one patient. Rescue Engine 23 was also responded and was placed in service due to patient being out of the vehicle. Chief 38 assumed Grayson Gap Road command. the subject involved just wanted to be taken to the local hospital so BLS 38-70 transported him to Potomac Valley Hospital. All units were in service by 22:00 hours

Friday the 13th Rescue Local 44-4

At 14:05 hrs Rescue Local 44-4 was sounded for a vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment, alerting Station 44, and Ambulance 38 (due to reports of multiple injuries). Dispatch information indicated a 2 vehicle accident on Rt 50 near Placka’s Storage Buildings, with multiple people injured and entrapped. Captain 44 (T. Turner) requested Engine/Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD) be alerted to assist with extrication. BLS 38-70 responded at 14:06 and arrived at 14:12. Chief 44 (T. Simpson) arrived on scene to confirm 2 vehicles involved, 5 patients, and at least 3 entrapped. Additional ambulances were requested from Fountain (39), Keyser (57) McCoole, MD (23) and Tri Towns EMS, MD (50). Engine/Tanker 38 was also requested to establish a landing zone at the Mill Creek Golf Course for air flight. Trooper 5 was able to fly out only 1 patient to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. BLS 38-70 transported 2 minor injuries to Potomac Valley Hospital.
Due to BLS 38-71 being committed transporting a patient from an earlier call to RMC, Tri Towns EMS (MD station 50) was requested to fill station 38 for EMS coverage.
Chief 44 (T. Simpson) had the Rt 50 command.

Mutual Aid on Box 39-1

At 13:46 hrs, Residential Box 39-1 was sounded for a structure fire on Knobley Road North. Station 39, Engine 33, Tanker 33, Engine 23, Squad 37, and Ambulance 57 were due. Within minutes Engine 39 was in the area, on Knobley Road advising of heavy smoke in the area. 39-5 then requested additional tankers from stations 38 and 35, as well as an engine from station 34. Engine 39 arrived on scene to find a large structure, which appeared to be abandoned, fully involved. 39-5 (J. Myers) assumed command and advised that no engines would be able to access the residence, due to the extreme remote location. Brush units were then requested from 38 and 34. A 3” supply line was laid to Brush 39 and Brush 23 for fire attack. Due to the remote location from the roadway, 1600’ of 3” was used. A tanker shuttle was established, and Engine 33-13 was the supply piece. Crews remained on scene for approximately 5 hours.

Two Vehicle Accident's within 2 Hours

On Monday April 11th at 0553 hrs Rescue Local 38-6 was sounded for a 2 vehicle accident on Route 93 alerting Tower and Ambulance 38, along with Squad 23 (McCoole, MD). BLS 38-71 arrived on the scene at 0605, and Tower 38 at 0606. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) assumed the Route 93 command. Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in a T-bone style accident. Appeared to be no entrapment. After paramedics assessed the patients air flight was requested for 1 of the patients. Paramedic 38-71 transported one of the patients to the heli-pad at station 23. Paramedic 38-70 transported 1 patient to RMC. Crews cleared the scene at 6:35.

Shortly after returning from the first incident Rescue Local 38-6 was sounded yet again at 0826 hrs for a 1 vehicle accident with possible entrapment. Paramedic 38-71 arrived on scene at 0832 to find 1 vehicle on it’s top with the patient still in the vehicle. Tower 38 arrived on scene at 0836, Captain 38b (F. Emmart) had the Route 93 command. Crews assessed the scene, determined that extrication would not be needed only stabilization of the vehicle to remove the patient via back board. Paramedic 38-71 transported the patient to RMC. Tower 38 returned to service at 9:14.

Crews Run on Box 44-4

At 1322 hours Residential box 44-4 was sounded for a flue fire on Patterson Creek Road South, alerting Station 44, Tower 38, and Engine Tanker 38. Tower 38 responded with 3 and Engine Tanker 38 responded with 2 at 1329. Engine Rescue 44 arrived on the scene at 1334 hours with nothing evident from Sides A and D. Chief 44 (T Simpson) assumed command. Tower 38 was directed to take Side A and ladder the chimney. Engine Tanker 38 was directed to stage along Patterson Creek Road and send their manpower to command. Tower 38 arrived at 1340 and the Engine Tanker at 1342. Crews assisted with opening and cleaning the flue. Engine Tanker 38 was placed in service at 1422. Tower 38 returned at 1431. Keyser Fire was alerted to hold an engine crew in station for New Creek.

Early Start to a Sunday Morning brings 2 Major Fires

Sunday March 27th began very early for New Creek volunteers, starting out in the wee hours of the morning. At 0126 hrs, Residential Box 38-1 was sounded for a structure fire on Pine Swamp Road. Tower, Engine Tanker and Ambulance 38, Engine and Tanker 33, Engine Rescue 23, Station 22 (for RIT) and Engine Rescue 44 (fill station 38) were due on the initial assignment. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) advised fire was visible from the Rt 220 area. Tower 38 responded with 6 at 0131, and the Engine Tanker with 3 at 0134. Dispatch indicated the caller advised the fire was located in the Pine Point subdivision off of Pine Swamp Road. Initial directions given were incorrect luckily a resident of the subdivision was able to point units in the right direction. The fire was off of a narrow side dirt road. Tower 38 arrived on scene at 0137 to find a 2 story farm house fully involved along with some involvement into the large pine trees adjacent to the structure. Lieutenant 38A (D. Braithwaite) assumed the Pine Point Command. Engine Tanker 38 was directed to lay in a 5” supply line to Tower 38 from the large turn around area prior to the driveway (approximately 400’). The next arriving engine (Engine 33-13) was directed to pick up the supply line and set up a dump tank for a tanker shuttle. Command requested the next 3 tankers be alerted. Hand lines were pulled from Tower 38. Due to the lack of water supply, ladder pipe operations were unable to be supported. Crews worked on scene for several hours. Last departing 38 units cleared the scene at 0638. The farm house was a total loss. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted due to the request of the home owner.

Later at 1056 hrs, Residential Box 140-1 was sounded for a structure fire on Nethkin Hill Road. Alerted were Station 140, Station 150, Tanker 70, Ambulance 4, and Engine Tanker 38 to fill station 140. Engine Tanker 140 responded within minutes and arrived shortly after. Engine Tanker 140 arrived on the scene to find a 1 story ranch style house heavily involved in fire. Initial reports from bystanders indicated possible entrapment. Engine Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 1102. Chief 140 (W. Ward) had command, and requested additional tankers to the scene. Engine Tanker 38 was then re-directed to the scene, and arrived at 1122. Engine Tanker 38’s crews were directed to take 2 hand lines into the structure to assist with attack. Engine Tanker 38 set up a water supply at the hydrant located just east of the city limits on Route 42, then returned to the scene. Unfortunately the fire was fatal claiming one of the family members. Engine Tanker 38 returned in service at 1644 hours.

Motor Vehicle with Rollover

On Wednesday March 9th at 1100 hours Rescue Local 38-6 was sounded for a single vehicle accident alerting Station 38 for the Tower and Ambulance and Station 23 for the Squad. Paramedic 38-71 responded with 2 (Medic 26 aboard). Tower 38 with 3, and Squad 23 with 3 also responded. At 1105 hours Paramedic 38-71 arrived on scene to find a one vehicle rollover with entrapment. Tower 38 arrived on the scene and Assistant Chief 38 established the Route 93 command while the crew started stabilizing the vehicle. Squad 23 arrived and assisted with stabilizing and crews from the Tower and Squad started extricating the patient from the vehicle. Extrication was complete at 1135 hours making it a 30 minute evolution. Paramedic 38-71 transported priority 2 to western maryland regional medical center. both the squad and tower cleared by 1200 hours.

On Friday February 11th, at 08:58, Residential 44-4 was sounded for a possible flue fire on Longview Road for a possible flue fire. Station 44, Tower 38, and Engine/Tanker 38 were alerted. Tower 38 responded with 5 at 09:03, and Engine/Tanker 38 (driver only) at 09:06. . Engine/Rescue 44 arrived on scene with nothing evident. Assistant Engineer 44 (M. Baker) had the command. Tower 38 arrived on scene at 09:16. The crew was directed to the roof to the check the flue. Crew assisted with opening up the flue which was approximately 75% blocked. Due to the limited manpower, an Engine crew was requested to hold in Keyser VFD for New Creek. An ambulance was also requested to transfer to station 38 from Tri-Towns EMS (MD). Tower 38 returned in service at 09:52. Engine/Tanker 38 was placed in service at 09:20.

Residential 38-2

On Friday February 11, 2011 at 06:37, Residential Alarm 38-2 was sounded for a possible flue fire in White Oaks subdivision off of Hershey Hollow Road, alerting Tower 38, Engine/Tanker 38, Engine 33, and Engine/Tanker 44. Tower 38 responded with 5 at 06:44, and arrived at 06:50 to find a 2 story, cape cod type residence, with nothing evident from Sides A and B. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) had command. Crews investigated the residence and flue areas, which appeared to have no fire. Crews assisted with checking the flue and checked for heat with the TIC inside the residence. With no hazards noted, the assignment was returned in service.

Residential Box 33-1

On Wednesday February 9th at 13:41 hrs, Residential Box 33-1 was sounded for a structure fire with possible entrapment. Station 33 (Keyser), Station 38 (New Creek), Engine/Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD), Engine 39 for RIT (Fountain), and Ambulance 57 (Keyser EMS) were alerted. Keyser PD unit 11 (also Chief 33) arrived on scene and advised heavy fire showing on the first floor. Tower 38 responded with 6 at 13:46, and Engine/Tanker 38 with 2 at 13:48. Assistant Chief 33 (M. Simpson) arrived on scene and assumed command. Engine/Rescue 23 arrived on scene and deployed a 1 Ύ” hand line in the front of the structure. Truck 33 positioned on the Side A. Tower 38 was directed to catch the hydrant at the corner of Orchard and St. Cloud Streets. 200’ of 5” supply was gutter lined. The crew from the tower was directed to ventilate the structure, and conduct a primary search of the second floor. The search found no occupants. New Creek units cleared the scene at 15:08.

1 Vehicle MVA

At 1433 hours Rescue local 38-7 was sounded for a vehicle accident on Route 93 alerting volunteers from New Creek Station 38 as well as Maysville Station 200 (Grant County). Initial reports indicated an unknown amount of vehicles involved and unsure of any injuries or entrapment. Tower 38 responded with 6 at 1435 hours, Paramedic 38-71 responded at 1439 hours with 3. While enroute further information indicated the possibility of 1 pt still being in the vehicle which was over the embankment. Tower 38 arrived on the scene at 1444 hours to find one vehicle over the embankment with only 1 patient who was sitting in another vehicle. Assistant Chief 38 assumed the Route 93 command. After size up command advised to continue Medic 38-71 and Maysville fire units, and to place 200-70 and BLS 4-4-71 in service. Crews packaged the driver of the vehicle and transported the patient to Potomac Valley Hospital. Crews remained on the scene to assist with traffic control. Maysville units stated that they were willing to remain on scene to handle traffic control so that Tower 38 could go back in service.

2 Vehicle MVA with Tractor Trailer

At 0724 hours Rescue local 44-4 was sounded for a 2 vehicle accident. Mineral County Dispatch advised of a tractor trailer versus a passenger car. At 0725 hours Company 44 (Burlington) requested a medic unit from station 38 (New Creek). Medic 38-71 responded at 0733 hours with a crew of 3 and Medic 29 aboard. At 0734 hours Mineral County Dispatch alerted Station 38 for the mutual aid to Station 44 for the Ambulance. BLS 38-70 responded with a crew of 2. Medic 38-71 was first on the scene and was assigned the priority 1 patient from the passenger car. Air Flight was requested for the priority 1 before arrival of the ambulance and Trooper 5 was inbound. BLS 38-70 treated and transported the driver of the tractor trailer to PVH priority 2. at 0737 hours Route 50 command requested an engine out of 38 to set up the landing zone for trooper 5. Engine Tanker 38 responded with a crew of 3 at 0742 hours. The engine tanker handled the landing zone and was cleared at 0833 hours. all units were back in service by 0845 hours.

2nd Alarm Commercial Structure

At 2015 hrs on Monday December 21st Mineral County 911 received reports of a possible structure fire at the Kessel Lumber facility on Rt 972. At 2016 hrs Commercial Box 38-3 was sounded alerting Tower 38, Engine Tanker 38, Ambulance 38, Engine 33, Truck 33, Tanker 33 (Keyser), Engine Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD), Engine 221 (Potomac, MD) (for RIT), Engine Rescue 39 (Fountain) to fill Station 38. Upon alert, firefighters in station 38 confirmed a working fire. Within minutes Tower 38 (w/6), Engine Tanker 38 (w/5) responded and arrived on the scene to find a large industrial complex with heavy fire showing on Sides A and D. Chief 38 (C. Biggs) assumed command and immediately requested a 2nd alarm. The 2nd alarm assignment alerted Engine Rescue 39 (upgraded to scene), Tanker 39 (Fountain), Engine Tanker 44, Tanker 44 (Burlington), Truck 24 (Piedmont), Squad 23, (McCoole, MD) Engine Rescue 140 (Elk District) to fill Station 38. Tower 38 caught the hydrant at the entrance to Healy Heights and positioned on the A/D corner. Ladder pipe operations were set up. Engine Tanker 38 split lay 5” LDH at the entrance to the facility and positioned on side A near the B corner. Truck 33 was the next unit to arrive and was directed to position on Rockland Farm Road on the B side of the building. Engine Rescue 23 was directed to pickup Truck 33’s 5” supply line and reverse lay to the hydrant past station 38 at the car wash. Engine 33-13 was directed to pickup Engine Tanker 38’s 5” supply line and set up to draft from the creek. Crews were able to contain the fire to the original building involved. Ladder pipe operations were set up on both the B and D sides of the buildings as well as hand lines off each aerial device. Multiple hand lines were also deployed from Engine Tanker 38. Crews were hampered by extreme heat from the building as well as the high threat of acetylene tanks and other explosive materials in the building. No injuries were sustained on the incident. The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to investigate the origin of the fire. Due to the amount of firefighters on scene ambulances were requested from Keyser EMS and McCoole VFD to standby at the scene. Lamberts Ambulance Service provided an ambulance to fill Station 38 for EMS coverage along with Elk District VFD for fire. New Creek units cleared the scene at 23:36 hrs.

2 Residential Box’s for the 38 crew

On Saturday November 13th, crews from New Creek VFD were dispatched for two residential boxes for possible structure fires. One 1st due, one as mutual aid. At 16:28, Residential Box 38-1 was sounded for a possible kitchen fire on Trenum Drive, in New Creek Heights. The alarm assigned Tower 38, Engine/Tanker 38, Ambulance 38, Engine 33 (Keyser), Engine/Rescue 23(McCoole, MD), Tanker 33, Engine/Tanker 22 (Potomac, MD)(RIT), and Engine/Rescue 44 (Burlington)for station fill. Tower 38 responded with 4 at 16:32. Tower 38 arrived on scene at 16:35 to find a single family dwelling, mobile home type, with nothing evident from all 4 sides. Assistant Chief 38 assumed command. Crews investigated to find that the fire had been contained to the oven, and had already been extinguished by a neighbor. Command held all New Creek units, as well as ER44 to fill, for approximately 20 minutes to ventilate. Crews secured the power to the oven and checked for extension. All units were placed in service and command terminated at 16:51.

At 22:07, Residential Box 140-1 was sounded for a structure fire on Pine Street in Elk Garden. Stations 140 (Elk District), 150 (Mt Storm), Tanker 70 (Kitzmiller, MD) Ambulance 4 (Elk District Amb), and Engine/Tanker 38 were due. Chief 140 confirmed working structure fire while en route to the station. Within minutes, Engine/Tanker 143 arrived on scene, Chief 140 assumed Pine Street command. Crews from ET 143 and ER 141 attempted to make entry in to the structure. Multiple large items were up against the front door on the inside, making entry nearly impossible at first. Crews attempted to knock down the fire from the exterior. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 22:11, and arrived on scene at 22:30. ET 38’s crew was assigned to make entry on the 2nd floor for fire attack. Ground ladders were thrown on 3 sides of the structure as a crew of 2 entered. Crews assisted with fire extinguishment and salvage/overhaul. Engine/Tanker 38 was released at 01:27.

Station 38 Volunteers Handle Multiple Jurisdiction's

On Monday October 25th 2010 For approximately 5 hours, various apparatus from New Creek were on the street for several incidents. Only one of the incidents occurred within the first due boundaries of “the creek”. The first of the calls came in at 09:47 hrs, for EMS local 38-3. Paramedic 38-70 responded, and transported one patient to Potomac Valley Hospital. The next incident occurred at 10:50. Engine/Tanker 38 was requested to transfer to Station 200 (Maysville VFD – Grant County). ET 38 responded with 5, and filled Station 200 until 15:06. At 11:54, Station 38 was alerted for Medic local 57-4, for seizures at Keyser Primary Middle School. Paramedic 38-70 responded, but obtained 1 signed refusal. School officials were able to mitigate the child’s issues, and no longer needed EMS. At 12:55, Station 38 was alerted for Rescue Local 33-7, as mutual aid to Keyser EMS. BLS 38-71 responded and obtained 1 refusal and 1 transport to Potomac Valley Hospital. At 13:39, Station38 was alerted for an EMS local 4, in the Hartmansville area for chest pains. BLS 38-71 responded along with BLS 4-471 from Grant County (dual alert per Station 4 box cards). The crew from 38-71 assisted with care and loading. BLS 4-471 transported the patient. Finally at 14:42 hours, Station 38 was requested to respond an ambulance to assist on Rescue Local 44-4, a reported passenger vehicle vs school bus. BLS 38-71 responded with 3, and transported the driver of the passenger vehicle to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. A second ambulance was requested shortly after to assist. BLS 38-70 also responded with 3. 70’s crew was assigned to sort out and obtain refusals from the children/parents who did not wish to be transported. A total of 16 refusals were obtained. An ambulance from Tri Towns EMS (Station 50) was transferred to Station 38 to cover while both units were in committed to the incident.

Today we operate out of a much newer and larger station located 1 mile east of the old Station on Route 50
