Working Structure in 38's First Due
Sat. Sep 11th 2010

On Saturday September 11th 2010 at 21:52, Residential Alarm 38-2 was sounded for a possible structure fire on the Cut-Off Road (Rt 220), alerting Station 38 (for Tower 38 and Engine/Tanker 38), Engine 33, and Engine/Tanker 44. Tower 38 responded with 6 at 21:52 and the Engine/Tanker with 5 at 21:55. Due to insufficient directions, the crews were unable to find the residence at first. At 21:57, Tower 38 arrived on scene to find a 1 story single family dwelling, with smoke showing from the eves of Sides Adam and Baker. Due to the narrow driveway, Tower 38 was staged along the Cut Off Road. Engine/Tanker 38 took the driveway and deployed (2) 1 ¾” hand lines. Crews forced entry via the front door to find heavy smoke conditions. Upon investigation, crews found and contained the fire to the bedroom area of the residence. Tower 38’s crew was assigned as the backup crew at the entrance. Engine 33-13’s crew was assigned to vertically ventilate the roof of the structure. Engine/Tanker 44’s crew was assigned at the RIT team. Although only approximately 500 gallons of water were used, crews could have potentially been hampered by a broken water main. While opening the hydrant, the water main had shut down for unknown reasons (which later was found out to be a rupture of the line). Chief 38 (C. Biggs) had command of the incident, Captain 38 (C. Cox) had safety, Assistant Captain 38 (B. Biddle) had interior ops, and Captain 33 (B. Robinson) had roof top ops. Crews returned in service at 23:36.
