Station 38 due for Residential Box 33-1
Sat. June 19th 2010
At 4:07 hrs, Residential box 33-1 was sounded for a structure fire on South Main Street in Keyser. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5, Tower 38 with 4, and Air/Light 38 with 3. Crews were directed to assist with interior operations, ventilation and to provide air supply. Tower 38 was assigned to the "Charlie" side of the structure to set up for ventilation, due to power lines prohibiting access from the "Adam" side. Engine/Tanker was assigned to the rear also to support the Tower. Crews remained on scene until 06:56. A paramedic crew was held in station during the incident, and an Engine crew from Elk District was placed in Station 38.

Vehicle Over The Embankment - Cut Off Road
Sat. June 5th 2010
At 11:44 hrs, Station 38 and Squad 23 were alerted for Rescue local 38-2. Reports indicated a vehicle over the embankment about half way up the Cut-Off Road. Lieutenant 38 (J. Braithwaite) arrived on scene to find 1 vehicle over the embankment above the S-turns above Knobley Mt Orchard Subdivision. All occupants were out of the vehicle. Paramedic 38-71 transported one pediatric PT along with the mother (signed refusal) to Potomac Valley Hospital.

Unusual MVA At Beyberry
Thu. May 13th 2010
Rescue 38-1 was sounded at 16:43 hrs for a vehicle vs dumpster at Beyberry apartments, alerting Station 38 and Squad 23. BLS 38-71 (with 2) and Tower 38 (with 5) responded at 16:45. Both units arrived at 16:47 to find 1 vehicle involved, with 1 occupant still in the vehicle. A large wooden fence and dumpster were knocked over. Investigation found 1 transport (non life threatening injuries), and 1 signed refusal. Squad 23 was placed in service. Units remained on scene for approximately 30 minutes total until the arrival of West Virginia State Police.

Busy Day For The Creek
Thu. May 6th 2010
Thursday proved to be a challenging day for the members of New Creek VFD. Beginning at 3:46 am, members were alerted for a mutual aid EMS call to Burlington. Prior to response, an ambulance from 44 responded and placed New Creek in service. Next, at 5:37 am Residential Box 33-1 was sounded for a house fire on Keys Street in Keyser. Engine/Tanker 38 was due, and responded with 3. Members assisted on the fire which unfortunately took the life of the occupant. The next call was at 11:09 am, an EMS call on Rockland Farm Road. Unfortunately like many other volunteer departments, available members were scarce at the time of this incident. Keyser EMS was alerted for mutual aid, and BLS response 38 responded driver only. Luckily the caller only needed assistance and was not injured.
12:44 pm was the next call, a direct phone call was made to the department for a special request for assistance. BLS 38-70 transported a chest pains patient. After a few hour break, the next round began. At 15:42 pm, Rescue 38-1 was sounded for a multi vehicle accident on Pine Swamp Road, alerting Station 38, Squad 23, and Ambulance 57. Tower 38, BLS 38-70 and 71 responded along with Squad 23 and BLS 57-70. Units found 3 vehicles involved. A total of 4 signed refusals were obtained. While still on scene, Rescue 38-2 was sounded for another vehicle accident on Hooker Hollow Road. Station 38 and Squad 23 were alerted for the incident. Tower 38 was able to clear the accident on Pine Swamp Road and respond to the 2nd accident. The scene on Pine Swamp was turned over to OEM1, who was also on scene. Due to both New Creek ambulances being committed to the Pine Swamp incident, and no other ambulances were alerted, Tower 38 requested the next due ambulance to be alerted, bringing BLS 44-70 (Burlington). Tower 38 arrived on scene to find 2 vehicles involved, in a near head on collision. Crews were able to obtain 2 signed refusals. Squad 23 was used for traffic control on the incident, until they received a 1st due MVA, which they were then released. Shortly after all units had returned to the station and the paperwork had begun, Rescue 38-7 was sounded for a 2 vehicle accident on Rt 93 at Walkers Ridge. Station 38, Squad 200 (Maysville) and Grant County Ambulance was alerted. Crews arrived to find 2 vehicles involved, head on collision. Luckily no injuries were reported on this incident also. 1 refusal was obtained by New Creek, while the other by EMS units from Grant County.

Early Morning Structure Fire In Keyser

Residential Box 33-1 was sounded this morning at 04:52 hrs for a structure fire on C Street in Keyser. Volunteers from 33 (Keyser), 38 (New Creek), 23 (McCoole), 39 (Fountain) and 57 (Keyser EMS) were alerted. Engine/Tanker 38 (with 5) and Air/Light 38 (with 2) responded. Paramedic 38-71 also responded a little later in the incident along with an ambulance from McCoole. Crews from the engine/tanker assisted with extinguishment, and overhaul. Air/Light 38 provided air supply. Paramedic 38-71 transported 2 patients from the fire with burns and other injuries. Burlington VFD was requested to fill station 38 with their Engine/Rescue.

Busy Few Days

The last few days have been fairly busy for volunteers of New Creek VFD, after a slow down for the beginning of April. On Saturday April 10th, Commercial Box 33-1 was sounded for a dryer fire in a building at 20:04 hrs. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 20:07. Assistant Chief 33 (M. Simpson) arrived on scene to find light smoke in the building. Crews later found the problem to be in the lint traps above the dryers. ET 38's crew was held along with Engine/Rescue 23's crew until crews finished ventilating the building. Tower 38 responded with 5, and Air/Light with 3.
On Monday April 12th, NCVFD had 2 back to back calls for the Air/Light and Tower. At 11:01 hrs, Engine/Tanker 38, and Air/Light 38 were alerted for a residential box between Elk Garden and Piedmont, due to no responses from Tanker 70 and Air 3. Per command the Air/Light was to continue in, and the Engine/Tanker could remain in service. Air/Light 38 assisted with refilling SCBA bottles.
Also on Monday, as Air/Light 38 was returning from the mountain, Residential Alarm 44-3 was sounded for an automatic fire alarm at 12:05 hrs. Tower 38 was due for the incident on Headsville Road. Tanker 39 was the first unit to arrive. Crews found no hazards, only some light smoke in the building (due to some work being completed by the resident), and placed all units in service.
Upon returning from the mountain, the crew from Air/Light 38 switched apparatus to BLS 38-70 for EMS local 38-5 for general illness.
Snow Brings More Trouble

Tuesdays small snow storm brought a flurry of accidents across Mineral County. To start them all off, Rescue local 38-2 was sounded for a vehicle over the embankment. Station 38 and Squad 23 were alerted for the incident at 17:22 hrs. ET38, BLS 38-70 and 71 all responded, along with Squad 23. Crews traveled the length of the Cut Off Road with nothing found. BLS 38-70 investigated Rt 50 West, while 71 and ET investigated Rt 50 East. A pickup was found over them embankment approximately 200 yards East of Knobley Farms Market. The vehicle was found on it's side, with the driver out, and appeared uninjured. Crews obtained 1 signed refusal, and assisted with traffic control.
Mutual Aid Structure Fire

At 10:57 hrs, Residential box 44-1 was sounded for a possible structure fire on Sector Road off of Rt 220. Station 44 (Burlington), 1 (Romney), Engine/Tanker 38 (New Creek), and an Engine from 39 (Fountain) to fill station 44 were alerted. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 4 at 11:04. RE 44 arrived on scene to find nothing evident from a single story residence. After investigation, crews found fire in the bathroom area of the residence. ET 38 arrived on scene at 11:28, and was directed to assist with ventilation and overhaul. ET 38 cleared at 12:37. Keyser VFD was alerted to hold an engine crew in their station for 38.
Units on scene included: RE 44, Ta 44, MRP 44, ET 44, U 44, ET 38, E 1-14, L 1, E 46-11, Ta 46, and 11-71.
Smoke Scare At Keyser High School

At 16:12 hrs, local alarm 38-1 was sounded for at commercial alarm at Keyser High School. Station 38, 2 engines, and a truck from 33 (Keyser) were due on the assignment. Tower 38 responded with 6 at 16:17, and Engine/Tanker 38 with 2-1 at 16:19hrs. At 16:18 hrs, Mineral county 911 updated the assignment to a commercial box alarm due to smoke now being reported in the electrical room. Engine 33-13 and Tower 38 arrived at 16:21. Engine 33-13 took the system while Tower 38 took the B/C corner (near the reported smoke area). Engine/Tanker 38 took side A. Chief 38 (C. Biggs) arrived on scene just prior to first arriving units, and established command. After a quick investigation, crews found an open transformer box outside of the building, with crews from Allegheny Power attending to it. A malfunction had occurred in the box with some components, causing the smoke, which found it's way into the electrical room via conduit and piping. Crews assisted with ventilation and reseting the alarm system. Units cleared the scene at 16:48.
Units on scene: Tower 38, Engine/Tanker 38, Engine 33-13, Truck 33. RE 140 was placed in service, and ET 44 held at station 38.
*The wrong commercial box alarm was sounded for this incident. Squad 23 should have been added to the assignment along with an engine from 44 to station 38. An unknown error placed 140 and 200 on the assignment. This mistake is currently under investigation.

Tower 38 was able to clear the accident on Pine Swamp Road and respond to the 2nd accident. The scene on Pine Swamp was turned over to OEM1, who was also on scene. Due to both New Creek ambulances being committed to the Pine Swamp incident, and no other ambulances were alerted, Tower 38 requested the next due ambulance to be alerted, bringing BLS 44-70 (Burlington). Tower 38 arrived on scene to find 2 vehicles involved, in a near head on collision. Crews were able to obtain 2 signed refusals. Squad 23 was used for traffic control on the incident, until they received a 1st due MVA, which they were then released. Tower 38 Special Requested

At 07:38 hrs, local alarm 33-1 was sounded for a rekindle of last nights structure fire, alerting Station 33 (Keyser), Engine/Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD), and Engine/Tanker 38. Assistant Chief 33 arrived on scene to find some light smoke and fire on the 2nd floor of the structure. The areas involved were areas that were nearly impossible to reach during the overhaul process last night due to unsafe building conditions. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5. Shortly after, Tower 38 was requested to assist with the 2nd floor areas. The remaining areas were extinguished, and units cleared the scene at 09:11 hrs.
