Structure Fire In Keyser
Wed. Jan 6th 2010
At 18:26 hrs, Commercial Box 33-1 was sounded for a structure fire at the corner of Gilmore and West Piedmont Streets. Stations 33 (Keyser), 23 (McCoole, MD), 38 (New Creek), 39 (Fountain) and 57 (Keyser EMS) were alerted. Assistant Chief 33 arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 18:32, and was directed to take the hydrant at the corner of A and West Piedmont Street. Both 1 3/4" cross lays were deployed to assist with exterior extinguishing and exposure protection on the "David" side. Air/Light 38 responded with 4 and provided air and light for the incident. Units cleared the scene at 22:10, and 22:49 hrs.

Tractor Trailer Overturns On Route 50

At 12:58 hrs, Rescue Local 38-5 was sounded for a tractor trailer accident on Rt 50, alerting station 38 and squad 23 (McCoole, MD). Mineral Medic 1 (staffed by members of Burlington), responded upon the initial dispatch. BLS 38-71 responded at 13:05 and arrived on scene just behind Mineral Medic 1 at 13:09. Tower 38 responded with 5 at 13:06, and arrived on scene at 13:11. Units arrived to find 1 tractor trailer involved, with the east bound lane of Rt 50 blocked. The driver was out of the vehicle, and appeared to have minor injuries. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) established the Rt 50 command. Investigation revealed the truck was hauling frozen chicken. Station 140 (Elk District) was requested to assist with traffic control at the top of Rt 50, as well as Brush 38 at the bottom. DOH and WV DOT were notified and responded. Mineral Medic 1 and BLS 38-71 obtained 1 signed refusal. DOH arrived on scene and took over traffic control duties. All hazards were controlled and command was terminated. Remaining units were placed in service while the Mineral County Sheriff's Deputies awaited the arrival of towing.

Snow Storm Brings Call For Help

An early winter snow storm brought on several inches of snow, and several mishaps for Mineral County. New Creek volunteers were requested to assist with several vehicle accidents and vehicles in the ditches. Luckily no injuries were reported with in the New Creek area.
As always, members urge the community to use extreme caution when traveling in harsh weather. The steep mountains and sharp turns are difficult enough to navigate in normal weather conditions, let alone snowy and ice conditions.
First Due Outbuilding Fire

At 13:07 hrs, Residential box 38-3 was sounded for an out building fire on Kings Run Road, alerting Station 38, engine and truck from 33 (Keyser). Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 4 at 13:12 hrs. Information regarding the location of the incident revealed it was up a narrow dirt road. Captain 38 (C. Cox) requested Tanker 33, rather than truck 33, due to the location, as well as requested a tanker from 44 (Burlington). ET 38 arrived at 13:20 to find a fully involved "lean to" style out building on fire, as well as an exposure building partially involved. Captain 38 (C. Cox) assumed the Kings Run Road command. A quick knock down of the fire prevented the complete loss of the exposure building and it's contents. Last 38 units cleared the scene at 14:42.

Engine Tanker 38 Assists Potomac

At 9:04 hrs, Tankers 33 (Keyser), 38 (New Creek), and 39 (Fountain) were alerted to assist Potomac Volunteer Fire Department of Westernport, MD for a structure fire on Maryland Highway. At 9:10 hrs, ET 38 responded with 5. The crew was requested to stage just prior to the scene, upon arrival. After a few minutes on scene, Air/Light 38 was requested to respond non-emergency to the scene for air supply. The crew from ET 38 were then requested to transfer to Station 22 for fill in. ET 38 was released from station 22 at 11:45 to respond to a vehicle accident in New Creek.
Busy Day In & Around The Creek

Wednesday started off as a busy day for New Creek, and continued through the day. As of 17:30 hrs, the department answered 6 emergency calls.
The first call was alerted at 07:56 hrs, for a vehicle accident on Rt 220, near the intersection with Stony Run Road. Rescue local 33-8 was sounded bringing Station 33 (Keyser), Ambulance 57 (Keyser EMS), Squad 23 (McCoole, MD) and Engine 38. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 08:01, and arrived with Squad 33 at 08:05. Crews found 2 vehicles involved, no entrapment, did not appear to be any injuries. Squad 23 was placed in service by command (33-6 B. Keyes). At 08:08, New Creek was alerted for EMS, mutual aid to Keyser EMS. BLS 38-70, 71 both responded at 08:08. Both units were placed in service prior to arriving on scene, the crew from E/T 38 were able to handle 2 signed refusals. ET 38 cleared the scene at 08:35. At 12:20, Medic local 38-1 was sounded for breathing difficulties at Keyser High School. At 12:23, a second medic local 38-1 was sounded again for Keyser High School for a second patient who was unconscious. BLS 38-70 responded with 2 and 1 at 12:24, and BLS 38-71 responded with 2 and 1 at 12:25. ET 38 also responded with 2 at 12:27 for assistance. Both patients were transported to Potomac Valley Hospital.
While en route to PVH, BLS 38-71 witnessed a rear end type collision at the intersection of Rt 220 and Pine Swamp Road. Rescue local 38-1 was sounded. BLS 38-70 cleared from PVH, as well as ET 38 responded from the high school. ET 38 arrived in the area to find no accident, units were placed in service.
At 14:53 Rescue local 38-2 was sounded for a vehicle accident on the Cut-Off Road, bringing Station 38, and Squad 23 (McCoole, MD). BLS 38-71 responded with 2 at 14:57, and ET 38 with 4 at 15:01. Units arrived on scene at 15:00 to find a 2 vehicle, rear-end type collision, with the North bound lane blocked. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) assumed command. Crews found no injuries, and provided traffic control until the arrival of towing. BLS 38-70 also responded, but was placed in service prior to arriving on scene. Units cleared the scene at 15:23. At 17:06 Station 38 was alerted for an ambulance for Rescue local 39-6 on Knobley Road. Fountain's ambulance was already committed to another accident in their first due. BLS 38-71 responded with 3 at 17:08, and arrived at 17:16. Per command (Assistant Chief 39 (J. Rogers), no injuries were reported, BLS 38-71 obtained 1 signed refusal and cleared at 17:29. Brush/Trash Fire

While crews were presenting our annual fire prevention program to the New Creek School, Local alarm 38-6 was sounded for a possible brush fire at 09:55. After crews quickly picked up and secured the equipment being used for the fire prevention, members returned to the station to respond the appropriate apparatus. At 10:01 hrs Engine/Tanker 38 (with 5) and Tanker 38 (with 1/1) responded. Initial reports from dispatch indicated a large amount of smoke on the New Creek mountains, visible from the Allegheny front. Due to the windy and dry conditions, brush units were requested from stations 33 (Keyser) and 140 (Elk District), as well a tanker from 33. Units were finally able to pinpoint the location on Pancake Road, off of Rt 93. Crews arrived on scene to find a large pile of brush, trash, and logs on fire. Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) had the Pancake road command. Crews remained on scene for just short of 2 hours to ensure the entire burnt area was completely extinguished because of the high winds and very remote location of the incident.

Mutual Aid MVA's - Knobley Road And Route 220

At 13:12 hrs, Station 44 was alerted for a vehicle accident, with rollover on Knobley Road South. At 13:21 hrs, Station 38 was also alerted to respond. BLS 38-71 also responded (with 2) at 13:21 hrs. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 4 at 13:23. A second MVA was then alerted at 13:23 at the intersection of Rt 220 and Pin Oak Lane. ET 38 and Response 38 were due for this incident. Engine/Rescue 44 then responded for the Knobley Rd incident. ET 38 was then diverted to the second incident.
BLS 38-71 arrived on scene of the first incident to find 1 vehicle, on it's side off the roadway on fire, at 13:33 hrs. It was confirmed that all occupants were out of the vehicle. ER 44 arrived to extinguish the fire. BLS 38-71 obtained 1 signed refusal, and transported 2 priority 3 patients to PVH.
38-6 (medic 25 B. Keller) arrived on scene of the 2nd incident at 13:25 to find 2 vehicles involved, rear end type collision with the south lane blocked. ET 38 arrived at 13:27, and Asst Chief 33 shortly after. BLS 38-70 was alerted at 13:30, and arrived at 13:34. An ambulance was also requested from Station 23 (McCoole, MD).

Structure Fire In Keyser
Mon. Aug 31st 2009
At 15:28hrs, Mineral County 911 alerted box area 33-1 for a working structure fire at 46 Orchard Avenue, sending Station 33 (Keyser) 38 (New Creek) Engine/Rescue 23 (McCoole, MD), Engine/Rescue 39 (Fountain) for RIT and 57 (Keyser EMS). Chief 33 arrived on scene and confirmed a working structure fire. Engine/Tanker 38 responded at 15:32 with 4 and Air/Light at 15:36 with 4 and 2. Engine 33-13 arrived on scene, and deployed hand lines into the structure, along with Truck 33's crew. Engine/Tanker 38 arrived on scene at 15:38, and was given the assignment to vent the roof of the structure. Crews through a 24' ladder, but was able to access the roof via truck 33. A quick knockdown was achieved by the 33 crews. Air/Light 38 arrived at 15:42, and was assigned to assist with overhaul. Elk District VFD (Station 140) was requested to transfer an engine to station 38, and Burlington (station 44) was requested to hold an EMS crew in.

Air Light Answers Special Request

Air/Light 38 was requested by OEM 1 to assist with an incident on Rt 50 on the Allegany Mountain. The incident originally was received at 14:43 hrs, and Elk District Fire and EMS were alerted for a possible vehicle accident. Units arrived on scene to find a large construction drill had fallen off the tractor trailer low boy as it rounded a turn. Command requested station 38 to assist with shutting down Rt 50 at the bottom of the mountain until the arrival of WV DOH. A/L 38 responded with 2 at 15:02, and was placed in service at 16:22. Due to the large size of the machine, and delicate process of up righting the machine, Mineral County OEM was requested for assistance. 2 large tow trucks (Winters and Hedricks) were also requested to assist. Air/Light 38 was also requested to assist with scene lighting. A/L 38 responded non-emergency with 2 at 19:31, and returned in service at 22:22.
