Stony Run Flue Fire
Tue. Mar 10th 2009

At 19:46 hrs, local alarm 33-9 was sounded, alerting stations 33 and 38 for a flue fire on Stony Run Road. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 19:49, and Air/Light 38 with 2 at 19:50. ET 38 arrived on scene at 19:53 to find a one story single family dwelling, with nothing evident from sides A,B and D. There was some sparks coming from the flue. Crews laddered the roof to investigate. Upon the arrival of Truck 33, the aerial ladder was also utilized for safely due to the slick metal roof. Crews used "dry chem bombs" to extinguish the fire, and removed the blockage. Chief 33 (M. Simpson) had command. New Creek units returned in service at 20:33.

Commercial Vehicle Fire At Potomac Valley Hospital
Mon. Mar 9th 2009

At 6:59 hrs, Stations 33 (Keyser) and 38 (New Creek) were alerted for a vending truck fire in front of the new Potomac Valley Hospital. Chief 33 arrived on scene, advising fire from the engine and passenger compartments. The vehicle was approximately 20-25' away from the front of the structure. Tanker 33 responded first with 2. Engine/Tanker 38 (with 3) and Engine 33 (with 3) both responded at 7:05hrs. Engine/Tanker 38 arrived on scene at 7:09, and Engine 33 shortly there after. Crews from ET 38 stretched a 200' 1 3/4" hand line and began extinguishing the fire. The fire had also extended into the cargo area of the truck. After speaking with the driver of the truck, the fire appeared to have started in the steering column. The driver stated that sparks came from the column when he tried to start the truck, smoke and fire soon followed. New Creek units returned in service at 7:47.

Structure Fire In Keyser
Fri. Mar 6th 2009

At 17:51 hrs, Box area 33-1 was sounded for a possible structure fire on North Main Street in Keyser, alerting Station 33, Engine/Rescue 23, Engine 39 (RIT) and an ambulance from 57. Chief 33 (M. Simpson) arrived on scene,confirming a working structure fire, requested the box to be filled. At 17:54, Engine/Tanker 38 was alerted. At 17:55, E/T 38 responded with 5, and arrived on scene at 18:00. Air/Light 38 responded with 6 at 17:57 and arrived at 18:02. E/T 38 was requested to lay a 5" supply line from the hydrant at the intersection of Center and Davis Street. Crews assisted with throwing ladders, ventilation, RIT, and overhaul. Air/Light 38 also supplied air, electric, and scene lighting. RE 141 from Elk District was initially requested to fill station 38, but was later requested to the scene by command. ET 153 from Mt. Storm was then requested to fill station 38.

Structure Fire In Burlington
Wed. Mar 4th 2009

At 12:14 hrs, Box 44-1 was sounded alerting Station 44, Engine/Tanker and Air/Light 38, and Engine 39 for a structure fire on Patterson Creek Road South. 44-7 (M. Baker) advised smoke was visible from the station. Rescue Engine 44 arrived on scene, advising smoke showing. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5 at 12:20, and Air/Light 38 with 4 at 12:22. Just minutes after the arrival of RE 44, Station 44 was also alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment, and ejection only a few miles south of the fire scene. The next in engine was requested to the scene, and other to the MVA. Engine/Tanker 38 arrived on scene at 12:31. Scene size up indicated a large 2 1/2 story farm house with smoke showing from the eves and attic area on all 4 sides. Engine 39 was next engine in the area, and was now 1st due to the MVA along with medic 44-70.

Assistant Chief 38 (D. Amtower) initiated command. The crew of RE 44 had one 1 3/4 hand-line stretched to the 2nd floor. Engine/Tanker 38 was directed to reverse lay a 5" supply line from RE 44 to a hydrant approximately 500' south of the incident. ET and AL 38's crews pulled a second line to the door, and began throwing ladders on sides B and D of the structure. Crews were hampered by a very large fire load in the attic area with little access. The attic and roof areas of the structure began to show indications of structural instability, and forced crews to be removed from the structure, to begin a defensive attack. Command was transferred to Assistant Chief 44 (T. Simpson) upon his arrival later in the incident.

Additional assistance was requested on the scene. Upon the completion of the MVA, crews from the incident returned to assist on the scene. Rescue Engine 141 from Elk District was transferred to Station 38 during the incident. Unit's on the scene included;

Burlington - RE 44, ET44, Ta44, M44-70, New Creek - ET 38, AL38, BLS38-71, Fountain - E39, RE39, Ta39, Romney - E1-13, Springfield E42-13, Keyser - Tr33

During the incident, multiple other calls were dispatched in the surrounding areas. BLS 38-71 was requested for the MVA on Patterson Creek Road. Tanker 38 was alerted and later cancelled for a brush fire on Ed Welsh Road in Burlington.

Rt 93 Tractor Trailer MVA
Thu. Feb 26th 2009

At 06:02 hrs, Station 38 and Squad 23 were alerted for a vehicle accident, possibly involving a tractor trailer. Medic 38-70 responded at 06:08, and Engine/Tanker 38 at 06:10. Upon the arrival of Medic 38-70 at 06:15, crews found 1 tractor trailer, on it's side blocking both lanes of Rt 93. The driver was out of the vehicle. Upon the arrival of E/T 38, Capt. C. Cox assumed the Rt. 93 command. The tractor trailer was carrying logs, and had partially lost it's load. Squad 23 was requested to shut down Rt 93 at the intersection with Rt 50, until the arrival of Utility 38. Maysville (Grant Co. Sta 200) was requested to shut down Rt 93 at the intersection of Rt 42. Medic 38-70 transported the driver to PVH for back pain. Rt 93 remained shut down for around 4 hours. Engine/Tanker 38 returned in service at 10:30 hrs.

Brush and Tanker Assist Burlngton With Large Woods Fire
Thu. Feb 12th 2009

On an extremely windy Thursday afternoon, Burlington (44) was alerted for 3 small brush fires in the same area on Winery Road off of Rt 220 south near the Purgitsville Ruritan. A high wind warning was in effect for the entire region, due to wind gusts of up to 60 mph. While responding, Brush 44 requested assistance from Romney (Hampshire Co. St 1) and Moorefield (Hardy Co. St 46). Upon arrival of Brush 44, Lt 44-4 (T. Turner) advised of an unknown amount of land involved, possibly 50-100 acres.

At 13:52 hrs, Brush 38 was requested, and responded with 5 at 13:56 hrs Arrived at 14:17. Brush 38 was released from the scene at 17:51 hrs.

Tanker 38 was dispatched at 14:12 hrs, responded at 14:14 hrs with 2, and arrived at 14:52 hrs. Crews assisted with fire suppression and overhaul.

BLS 38-71 was requested to cover EMS for Burlington.

Crews were hampered by high winds, downed electric wires, soft ground and thick mud. Several apparatus became hung up in the mud at various points of the incident. Much of the fire attack had to be performed on foot. The fire appeared to have started from a large tree falling onto a high tension power line.

Units on scene included Brush units and Tankers from Mineral, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy counties in West Virginia, and Allegany County in Maryland. The WV division of Forestry also responded.

Air Light Requested For The Outbuilding Fire
Sun. Feb 8th 2009

At 09:52 hrs, Elk District (st 140) and Mt. Storm (Grant Co. St 150) were alerted for an out building fire on Hartmansville Road. At 10:11 hrs, while responding, Chief 140 (W. Ward) requested to upgrade the assignment and requested a tanker from Kitzmiller (70), Air/Light from 38, and an engine to transfer to station 140 from Bloomington (36). Engine 143 arrived on scene to find a working out building fire, Chief 140 had the Hartmansville Rd command. Air/Light 38 responded at 10:18 with 5. The unit arrived at 10:34 hrs and assisted with refilling SCBA bottles. A/L 38 was released at 11:38 hrs. The fire unfortunately claimed approximately 20 hogs and sheep, but firefighters were able to save others.

First Due Brush Fire In Quail Valley Subdivision
Sat. Feb 7th 2009

At 12:56 hrs, local alarm 38-1 was sounded, alerting Stations 38 and 33 (Keyser) for a brush fire in the Quail Valley Subdivision. Dispatch had received several calls on the incident indicating a rapidly spreading fire due to moderate winds. Brush 38 responded at 13:01 with 5 personnel, and arrived at 13:05. Initial assessment revealed approximately 2-3 acres of grass/brush involved, Asst Chief 38 (D. Amtower) assumed command. Brush 38 utilized a booster line, while the crew from engine/tanker 38 stretched a 200' cross lay. Brush 33 was directed to the northwestern corner to assist. The landowner was on the scene, indicated that he had a bull dozer that could be of use if needed. Command directed the bull dozer to assist with creating a fire line at the head of the fire, and to assist with spreading out some of the wood piles. The cause of the fire was found to be from a previous control burn. The moderate wind conditions kept the ashes warm and eventually spread the embers to the dry grassy field area. Units cleared the scene at 14:02 hrs.

Units on the scene: Brush 38 (w/5) Engine/Tanker 38 (w/5) Tanker 38 (w/2) BLS 38-70 (w/3) and Brush 33 (w/2). Station 33 also held an engine crew on standby for New Creek while on the incident.

Fatal MVA Rt 220
Sun. Jan 18th 2009

At 03:12 hrs Station 38 and Squad 23 (McCoole, MD) were alerted for a 1 vehicle accident on Rt 220 near the Keyser Assembly of God Church. At approx 03:15 hrs Asst Captain J. Braithwaite arrived on scene to find one vehicle off the roadway, appeared to be a rollover with entrapment. Airflight availability was also requested. BLS 38-70 arrived on scene at 03:19. Medic 26 on board Air/Light 38 began ALS and transported with 38-70 to PVH. Crews from Squad 23 and New Creek had to remove the caved in roof to extricate the PT. An ambulance from Burlington had also just cleared PVH from a previous incident and stopped to assist with the incident.

Mutual Aid Flue Fire
Sat. Jan 17th 2009

At 11:33 hrs, Box 33-1 was sounded for a flue fire on B street in Keyser. Station 33 (Keyser), Engine 23 (McCoole), Engine/Rescue 39 for RIT (Fountain) and 57 for ambulance (Keyser EMS) were alerted for the call. At 11:43, and Engine/Tanker was due on the call due to Keyser Fire failing on their 2nd engine. Engine/Tanker 38 responded with 5. Crews assisted with some interior operations, and ventilation.

New DHHR Building Has Some Trouble
Sat. Jan 17th 2009

At 04:01 hrs this morning, Stations 38 and 33 (Keyser) were alerted for an automatic alarm activated with water flow at the new Department of Health and Human Resources off of Pine Swamp Road. Upon the arrival of ET 38, crews found a 1 story, commercial building with nothing evident from sides C, D and A. Captain 38 (C. Cox) assumed command. After the walk around of the structure, crews confirmed water flow from the drain of the sprinkler system. Upon the arrival of the keyholder, crews investigated the structure. A sprinkler head had malfunctioned, releasing a large amount of water. Crews assisted with checking for other hazards, and salvage what were in need. All units were released when ready.

Today we operate out of a much newer and larger station located 1 mile east of the old Station on Route 50
